When the case of a murdered stripper falls into Edgard “Zurdo” Mendieta’s lap, it seems like an easy one. But when he arrives at the scene of the crime, he realizes that the body lying in the weeds is that of the beautiful, Brazilian Mayra Cabral de Melo, who Mendieta knew years ago. Shortly thereafter, Mayra’s roommate Yolanda Estrada is also found dead. Suspects abound, but Zurdo narrows in on three: young drug trafficker Richie Bernal; Luis Ángel Meraz, an ambitious politician gunning to become governor; and the mysterious Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes. Behind these murders lies a ruthless showdown between the powers that be: arms traffickers who supply the drug lords and the Mexican army; wheeler dealers who recycle the money from illicit trafficking; the DEA; and drug cartels fighting for control of the country after the death of their “boss.”
A professor at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa, Élmer Mendoza (Culiacán, Mexico, 1949) published five volumes of short stories and two chronicles from 1978 to 1995. In 1999 he published his first novel, A Lonely Killer, on the culture of drug trafficking and its effects on Mexican society. The drug war is a reality every Mexican must contend with, and involves not only criminals, but children, women and innocent bystanders as well. Mendoza recounts this reality, transforming the language of the cities into artistic expression. Cities such as his native Culican, the setting of many of his novels (including A Lonely Killer and The Lover of Janis Joplin). Says Mendoza: “Culican is a prosperous, bustling city, full of beautiful women and bad press. It is a city suffocating under the weight of being home to the biggest drug kingpins.”
