Hearing Radmilla is a portrait of Radmilla Cody, Miss Navajo Nation 1997. She became a polarizing pop culture figure as the first bi-racial Miss Navajo. Radmilla embarked on an award-winning singing career and became a popular local celebrity. Her life took an unforeseen turn when she and her abusive boyfriend were indicted and tried for drug trafficking and she spent 21 months in a Federal Correctional Facility. Since her release in 2004 she continues to make music, is completing a college degree, and is an active spokesperson against domestic violence. “Initially, Radmilla’s story was to be only part of a larger project on Native pageants. As time passed, I tried to keep up with Radmilla as she began making appearances around the country. It wouldn’t be until several years later, that I would discover the darker side of Radmilla’s radiance. I wrote Radmilla another letter. This time it was addressed to her in federal prison. I asked if I could continue to document her story. Once again Radmilla said yes. The difference was that now the project was ours. We would work closely to complete this film. Whereas before there was some resistance on her part, now she felt as I did, that her story could work as a tool for discourse.” [Angela Webb]
