Guido Manuli: Compilation Noir

Anthology of shorts by Guido Manuli.

Guido Manuli
(1939, Cervia) moved to Milan to be an illustrator for a small publishing company. In 1960 he started a long-time collaboration with animator Bruno Bozzetto, assuming various roles, including those of animator, draftsman, director and artistic director. Bozzetto and Manuli worked together to create West and Soda, VIP - My Brother Superman, Allegro non troppo, and the signor Rossi saga. During the same period, Manuli also made television trailers and drew characters for television and advertising purposes. His most famous creations include Donna Rosa, Cavallino Michele, Jonny Bassatto and the Portobello parrot, as well as Scacciapensieri and Mr. Hiccup for Swiss television. In addition, starting in 1982, he also became a freelance producer of commercials and video clips. In 1991 Manuli won a David di Donatello for best screenplay, shared with Maurizio Nichetti, for the film Volere volare. This mixed-media feature, which Manuli also co-directed, was also awarded the international film critics' Golden Globe and the Corbucci Prize for best Italian film, and took home the top prize at the Montreal Film Festival, as well as its people's choice award. He had also doubled up with Nichetti on the 1978 series Gasad, gruppo a sinistra dell'AltraDomenica for Renzo Arbore's TV program, as well as the animated credits for the film Rataplan. He co-wrote the film Tomorrow We Dance (1982) and directed L’eroe dei due mondi in 1995, followed by Monster Mash four years later. In 2001 he made Aida of the Trees. Manuli completed the full CGI 3D series Acqua in bocca from 2007 to 2012. His work in print media includes his illustrations and comic strips for Tempo Medico. He has also made a number of short films, the latest being iMirror (2013) and I love Hitchcock (2014).
