On The Job is about the ambitions and passions of four men in Manila trying to make a living, for themselves and their families. It shows the parallels between two prison inmates who are contract killers, and the two agents of the law investigating the murders. As they get caught in a web of machinations of corrupt government officials, their jobs lead them on a head-on collision against each other, with their loved ones as collateral damage.

"I came up with the concept around 11 years ago. I was working with a service driver on a shoot, and he was talking about how he just came out of prison, he was working as a hit man and earning money from the inside. It struck me as an interesting story. At that point, I didn’t know anything about what was happening inside prisons. I kept the story for a number of years. Around four years ago, I started thinking about it again, did more research and found a lot more stuff. Aside from the prison system, we eventually found out that it’s tied to a much bigger story, that it was financed by military people. It would be really difficult to take prisoners out of jail without the warden’s approval, and the warden was a military appointee. That’s where the circle of conspiracy and corruption starts." [Erik Matti]

Erik Matti started his career in the 1990s, making numerous films and TV commercials. A versatile filmmaker, his many hats include writer, producer, actor, and acting director. He made his directorial debut with Scorpio Nights 2 (1998) and continued making films at a prolific pace in a very wide range of genres, from action and horror to comedy. His reputation as a master of genre has traveled beyond his native Philippines to reach foreign shores as his films have screened in numerous festivals worldwide. On the Job won the Jury Prize and Best Actor Award (for Joel Torre) at this year’s Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan).
